Stargirl By Jerry Spinelli (2000) - Wisdom's Webzine

Stargirl turns up at an ordinary high school where kids consider that it is the best to be as ordinary as possible. Stargirl becomes a hot issue for the entire school because she is so different and unique.

“She laughed when there was no joke. She danced when there was no music. She had no friends, yet she was the friendliest person in school.”

However, what make her special are not only her outstanding appearance, but her kind and friendly attitude towards everyone, treating everyone with a true heart. However, Stargirl’s fame doesn’t last long. Kids start to consider her as their”enemy”because she is so different. Still she continues to be friendly and truly happy for them. Stargirl eventually leaves school as others turn away from her.

“The earth is speaking to us, but we can’t hear because of all the racket our senses are making. Sometimes we need to erase them, erase our senses. Then – maybe – the earth will touch us. The universe will speak. The stars will whisper.”

After Stargirl leaves, some changes start to occur in other children. As Stargirl has done, kids cheer when their opponents score a goal or a new club is formed where kids can perform a nice act for others once a day.

“The earth is speaking to us, but we can’t hear because of all the racket our senses are making. Sometimes we need to erase them, erase our senses. Then – maybe – the earth will touch us. The universe will speak. The stars will whisper.”

Stargirl doesn’t have “self.” She does not care what she eats, what she wears, whether she is tired or sick. It is not a matter for her. She only focuses on “others” and her only interest is “what she can do for others”.

Moreover, even when another character, Leo, demands Stargirl to be ordinary, Stargirl accepts Leo’s advice and tries to be ordinary.

Because she abandoned herself completely, Stargirl could consider others every day and take up Leo’s advice which is completely different from her. Because she abandoned her being completely and only the one existence that is the whole remained, she could accept anyone and anything.

“I’m erased. I’m gone. I’m nothing. And then the world is free to flow into me like water into an empty bowl…. And, I see; I hear; But not with eyes and ears. I’m not outside my world anymore, and I’m not really inside it either. The thing is, there’s no difference between me and the universe. The boundary is gone. I am it and it is me. I am a stone, a cactus thorn. I am rain… “

Stargirl always did everything for others without expectation or resentment even though no one acknowledged her or gave her attention. She eventually opened the door for “others”who were different so that they could be accepted.

Now I look back at myself. Am I a star person? Abandoning my being and finding the everlasting true me… Am I a star who lights the world as the truth?

Now is the generation when everyone can become a true person, i.e. a star person, through “abandonment.” I wish more people could become star people throughout the world as soon as possible so that everyone could live so comfortably and happily as one in the true world. I’m sure that day could come very soon.
