Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘the science of life.’ Oil pulling has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, and has been widely spread these days by an Indian doctor, Karach. He proposes that many diseases can be cured with oil pulling.
Oil Selection
Traditional oil pulling is when you gargle with sesame oil or sunflower oil for 20 minutes. These days, other oils such as olive oil, canola oil and coconut oil, are used, too. It’s essential to use cold pressed oils in glass, stainless steel or HDPE bottles, as toxins from ordinary plastic bottles might be dissolved by the oils.
Method
Oil pulling is most effective before taking in water or food in the morning. Otherwise, it should be done when the stomach is empty; i.e. 4 hours after food intake and 1 hour after drinking water. When you have meals, the digestive organs work for 8 hours on average. Afterwards, the immune system is activated for detoxification. Therefore, when you wake up in the morning, the immune system is still working, which means oil pulling becomes more effective.
When you wake up in the morning, before drinking water or brushing your teeth, take a table spoon of oil, slowly gargle for at least 10~20 minutes, and let the oil flow thoroughly between teeth. You have to keep the oil in your mouth and do the pulling. When you spit out the oil, it must become white watery foam.
The oil that is spat out contains countless parasites, bacteria and toxins. It is recommended to spit it out on a tissue. Then rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth to keep your mouth clean.
Caution
If you have cuts in your mouth, you might get infected by germs through those cuts; therefore, you should avoid oil pulling. If you have amalgam or metallic substances as tooth fillings or implants, you should do oil pulling for less than 5 minutes to prevent heavy metals from being reabsorbed into your body. If you have a mercury filling, ask your dentist as it can be dangerous.
